Athens Singles

If you are single and visiting Athens, then you are lucky because Athens is flowing with cafes, bars, restaurants filled with groups of friends known as parées (plural for paréa). In general, being single in Athens or traveling solo to this city has many benefits. First of all, going out and socializing is not something just for weekends. So if you are here during the week, make sure you include time for enjoying the Athens’ shopping, dining and nightlife scene every night of the week. Here you will find some sophisticated and artsy hotspots that would make anyone wish they were single again.

Must-visit nightlife hotspots  It's no secret. You don't have to be in Mykonos or Santorini to enjoy non-stop nightlife action a la Grec moderne! Athens boasts one of the hottest nightlife and dining scenes, all year round. In fact, everyone can't wait for the summer to begin to enjoy its awesome coastal venues (many that stay open all year). And even when the temperatures are a bit cooler, Athenians are up and out enjoying life.

The most popular districts for singles of all ages are Kolonaki, Sintagma, Exarcheia, the Historic Centre (Monastiraki, Plaka, Thisio) Gazi, Psiri,Kerameikos  and on the coast Glyfada, Voula and Voulgiameni ... in other words, most of Athens offers single-friendly destinations. Here are some of the recent nightlife hotspots in some. For additional, please go to the nightlife section.

Kolonaki is a staple dining and entertainment destination catering to the city's urban working professionals who enjoy an after work cocktail at many of its bars that are open - and busy - until after midnight, even on weekdays. Some of the area's clubs and restaurants sport a New-York-London club look and feel; with chic decors, well-dressed patrons and high-priced cocktails. But the majority are chic and affordable with come-as-you-are door policies. Some of the streets where the bars are plentiful are: Haritos, Skoufa, Ploutarchou and Loukianou Streets. Popular bar classics Mai Tai, Tribeca, Rock ‘n Roll and Skoufaki have proven amazing staying power, inspiration perhaps for the dozens of successful bar/lounge/cafes that exist and continue to open in the area. Gazi and neighboring Psiri are packed with people ready to enjoy the area's many restaurants, bars, clubs, art galleries and theatres. The area's clubs host leading DJ's and feature the latest and greatest in their genre: hip hop, R&B, soul, rap, disco, funk, rock and Greek. Gazi is also home to many gay nightlife destinations. Some of Gazi's best -- according to Athenian night owls -- are: 45 Moires, Bios, (both have view of the Acropolis), Hoxton, Mamaca's, Gazarte, Tapas Bar, Gazaki and gay-friendly S-cape and Sodade. Single professionals also flock to many of the hotel bars for after-work cocktails such as the Alexander's at the Grande Bretagne; Sky Bar atop the St. George Lycabettus Hotel and the old-fashioned Galaxy bar on in the arcade gallery on Stadiou Street, not to be confused with the Hilton's glitzy Galaxy Bar, but also to 7Jokers on Voulis Street and Ambariza, just one of the many bars that have opened in this cute city enclave. In Plaka a must-drink rock classic is Stavlos. Monastiraki's old charm prevails with contemporary outposts such as Six D.O.G.S and newcomer T.A.F. (The Art Foundation) that offer an innovative mix of art and socializing. Psiri has some hot destinations too, La Rouge, Zanzibar and Ghost. Metaxourgeiou - This up and coming area (with its own metro stop) has been compared by many to New York City's famed MEPA, Meat Packing District of Tribeca, with trendy loft and warehouse-turned bars and restaurants the main ‘hood attractions. Must drink - Nixon continues to be the popular yuppie hangout for those who appreciate a good mojito, bloody mary and a film festival, often housed in the bar's cinema annex. Panormou a bar-filled street in Ambelokipoi is frequented by students who claim their favorites to be Marabou, Saxo, Panoramix and classic, Potopoleio. Nearby in Mavili Square is the bohemian Briki. Glyfada. The American airbase that was housed here in the 80s left its mark with a lingering population of ex pats. But visit the cafes, bars and restos on any day or night, and its no doubt an Athenian scene with good looking twenty and thirty-somethings just everywhere. Must drink: take your pick on Zisimopoulou and Lazaraki Streets. Some additional favorites include: Bourbon, Ache (former Ego Mio), Balux House Project and Rich.

Dance the night away

When you want to dance, these clubs provide the ideal setting, great music, good looking people and, in the summer, a breathtaking view of the Meditteranean. In the winter hed to: Venue on Pireos Street, Villa Mercedes in Rouf and Baraonda in Ambelokipoi. In the summer: Akrotiri in Ag. Kosmas - 2nd tram stop at Agios Kosmas) and Island and disco classic Vinilio in Varkiza.

Meet, eat, drink á lá Athené  One of the unique characteristics of dining in Athens is the ability to combine eating, drinking and socializing all in one venue. Here are some that have managed to get the combo just right: In Kolonaki: Central, Ratka, Jackson Hall, Prytaneion, Mai Tai, Papadakis and Mommys; in Ambelokipoi: Balthazar (in the summer) and Baraonda, Gazarte in Gazi; Baba au Rum in the center (near Kolokotroni Street); And Nixon in Metaxourgeio.
